NORTH ATTLEBORO - A sex offender who has been serving a life sentence for being a habitual burglar, has been granted parole.
Our partners at The Sun Chronicle reported in Thursday’s edition Harold F. Calligan, 62, was convicted in 2003 of burglary and assault on a 76-year-old woman in her North Attleboro Circle Court apartment but acquitted of trying to rape her.
The state Parole Board voted Monday to approve his release from prison with conditions.
Calligan must enter a long-term residential program or Community Resources for Justice program, but not before 12 months in minimum security and district attorney clearance.
Other conditions of his parole are that Calligan be monitored electronically for six months, must remain home overnight, be tested for drugs and alcohol, attend Alcholic Anonymous meetings three times a week, and undergo mental health counseling for adjustment from prison.
“The board concludes by unanimous decision that Harold Calligan has demonstrated a level of rehabilitation that would make his release compatible with the welfare of society,” the parole board wrote in its decision.
Calligan appeared before the board in December at a review hearing.
He had been denied a bid for parole in January 2023 but was allowed to apply again in three years.
Prior to his 2021 arrest, Calligan served 12 years in prison for raping an Attleboro woman and a North Attleboro woman after breaking into their homes in 1986.
