Plainville business hoping to house World Cup fans

PLAINVILLE - The dispute over funding for security in and around Gillette Stadium for this summer’s World Cup has been resolved.

Our partners at The Sun Chronicle reported in Thursday's edition the Kraft Group and the Boston host committee for the FIFA World Cup 2026 have reached a deal with the town of Foxboro over security costs for matches to be held at the stadium this summer.

For weeks, the Foxboro select board refused to issue the required event license for the games scheduled for June and July until a clear plan to cover the estimated $7.8 million in security costs was presented.

Town officials said they would not permit the international soccer tournament matches until the event organizers presented a proposal that allayed officials’ concerns that taxpayers would end up footing the bill.

World Cup housing proposed in Plainville

Although the World Cup isn’t being played in Plainville, temporary housing for fans attending the games has been proposed by Hatch Materials.

The landscaping materials business at 80 Washington Street, Route 1, plans 191 recreational home-type units, housing up to nine people each.

The item was the topic of a joint meeting Tuesday night of Plainville’s board of health, conservation commission, planning board, select board and zoning board of appeals.
