North Attleboro schools get a deep cleaning

NORTH ATTLEBORO - The school department's interim director of facilities and grounds, Christopher George, was introduced to school committee members during Monday night’s virtual meeting as part of a presentation regarding the department’s building projects in response to Covid-19.

George takes over for Kyle Kummer, who retired last months after years of service to the North Attleborough school department in the role.

One of the key projects highlighted in the presentation was the installation of air purifiers in each of the school’s classrooms. The first shipment of 160 air purifiers have been received and distribution and installation has already begun across the district.

Along with the air purifiers, the facilities and grounds department is in the process of replacing old mechanical HVAC rooftop ventilation units at town schools. The new units will help pull stale air out of the buildings through vents inside the schools walls.

Members of the school committee were also updated on weekly deep cleaning of buildings every Wednesday afternoon.

A crew of workers from DAI Restore, an emergency service company based out of Rhode Island, starts the weekly cleanings at 3:45 p.m. and will continue to do so for each of the next 3 weeks. The process includes the use of electrostatic sprayers, which dispense a specialized disinfectant solution that clings to the surfaces.

Other projects highlighted were the installation of plexiglass partitions on desks, the addition of touchless water fountains and added signage for buildings as required by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
