Healey appeals FEMA denial of flood relief

NORTH ATTLEBORO - Residents impacted by flooding on September 11 have a sliver of hope the federal government will provide disaster relief.

Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey has formally appealed the decision by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to deny financial aid to the state.

FEMA officials denied the request for a major disaster declaration and the resulting financial aid last month because the amount of damage was within the capabilities of the state, cities and town, and volunteer agencies.

Healey obviously disagrees, writing in her appeal, “These storms were devastating for our communities. I saw the mpacts firsthand – home and businesses were destroyed, roadways and bridges were inaccessible, and some residents had to be evacuated. Six months later, they are still rebuilding. The state has done all that we can to support their recovery, but the needs far outpace our available resources.”

It is not known when FEMA officials will respond to the governor’s appeal.

North TV spoke to North Attleboro Town Manager Michael Borg on Wednesday about the governor’s appeal and the importance of the federal aid.
